Characteristics to Run a Home-Based BusinessFlexibility, Self-discipline, Risk-taking and Vision
Running a home-based business can be exciting but it's not for everyone. One needs to be flexible, self-disciplined, take risks and maintain a vision.
Running a home-based business, regardless of whether it's party planning, advertising, freelance writing or tutoring, can be challenging as well as exhilirating. Before leaving the office or position where a more secure paycheque is guaranteed and striking out on one's own, one should consider whether the essential traits are in place to ensure greater success. Flexibility, self discipline, the ability to take risks and vision are crucial if one is to achieve in running a small, home-based business.
The Need for Flexibility When operating a home-based business one needs to be flexible in two different ways. The first is with the type of work one takes on and the second is with an erratic flow of funds. Work is likely to ebb and flow, regardless of what the small business owner does. Particularly with work like party planning, freelance writing or tutoring, contracts and students come and go with the season. Certain times of year are likely to be slow. During these times, the home-based business owner may need to take on work that he or she normally doesn't do, vary their market base or expand their skill set. At times, despite such ingenuity, funds may dry up. In this case, it's important to have saved, budgeted for slow times or have a partner, grant or some other source of income to tide one over until the work flows again.
The Quality of Self-discipline Running a business at home one is likely to be alone. As the owner, one doesn't have anyone else to tell one what to do or how to do it. Waking up at a specified hour is vital, as is structuring the day according to a fairly rigid routine. Being one's own boss is often challenging, especially if one's business is located in the domestic zone. Phones ring, people come to the door, animals need to be fed, chores pile up. Individuals who run such businesses are often treated by their partners as if they can accomplish all the domestic duties on top of their work. This common attitude can lead to stress, anxiety and a feeling of being overwhelmed. It's important to focus, remain organized, detach from as many distractions as possible and save perfectionism for the work, not for other aspects of existence. At least until the work day is finished! Risk Taking is the Key All entrepreneurs must take risks. Home-based businesses are rarely begun from perfectly solid financial foundations with a large network of contracts. One must invest funds one is never sure will be returned and put oneself out through advertising and other means in order to draw clients. Those who take risks have courage and the ability to utilize their inner resources, as well as their outer connections, in order to develop their businesses. Patience is necessary as it takes time for one's business to make a profit and sustain one in a more stable fashion. Operating a home-based business is never static; the elements involved in its structure and aims fluctuate. Taking risks never stops being essential. Maintaining a VisionPrior to opening the small business, spend a lot of time creating a plan for its future. Think of all the possibilities that it contains, in the moment and five or ten years down the road. Pick a name for the business that has longevity, talk to a financial planner, brainstorm the way the business will be promoted in the public. The visions that are most successful are versatile, flexible and truly capitalize on the skill sets, education and traits that the small, home-based business owner possesses. In a time of down-sizing and general job instability, running such a business can eventually provide one with more security and certainly, independence.
