Create a profitable website or blog using affiliate programs to earn money by referring visitors to recommended products and services.

An affiliate program is an online partnership between two parties where one has a product to sell and the other has a web page to promote that product. The “product” might be a specific item like an iPod, a service such as insurance or an all inclusive holiday offered by the affiliate merchant. The opportunities are almost endless, as there is an affiliate scheme for virtually any category or topic related to a particular website or blog.

How Affiliate Schemes Work

Anyone with a website or blog can promote a related product or service and earn an affiliate commission if a visitor clicks on a link and actually buys something. The commission is paid on a percentage basis and can be anything from 1% to 70%. Whilst high percentages look attractive, they are usually only offered on things that are much harder to sell, for example on ebooks from little known authors.

The product link can be a text link woven seamlessly into the page content, a banner link, a picture with accompanying text or even a full product page.

Websites with low traffic volume are unlikely to generate high levels of commission as they simply do not have enough potential customers, but affiliate schemes can provide a profitable income stream for established sites, especially those with a large loyal following who are more likely to trust opinions given about items on the site.

Where to Find Affiliate Programs

There are many well known affiliate hosting companies like ClickBank, LinkShare and ShareASale. Simply go to their websites and search for relevant affiliate merchants by subject. Well known brand names are easy to spot but it can be time consuming searching through hundreds of sites for potential affiliate partners.

An alternative method is to find brands that are a good fit with a website, and then find out whether they offer a suitable program either by looking for the affiliate link, usually at the bottom of the home page, or by doing a general Google search. Some merchants prefer not to advertise that they have an affiliate marketing program but a search will usually show which hosting company they use if they do have one.

How to Make Money on the Web Through Affiliate Commissions

Simply put up a link to a product on a web page and the sales commission will come. The principal is easy but it’s important to understand that commission will only be earned after many visitors have clicked on the link and then only if they really like the product and the price.

Successful affiliates know that they have to pre-sell the product first in order to get the visitor to click through and find out more. Pre-selling could be as simple as outlining the benefits of one well known product versus another or it could involve building trust with the visitor first as they may not be familiar with the brand being promoted.

The form of affiliate marketing used also needs to be adapted to suit the product so a cheap flight, for example, may be best advertised using a search box which encourages a visitor to key in some dates and get a quote. A pair of shoes, on the other hand, will almost certainly need a product picture, a price and a list of product benefits to encourage the visitor to find out more.

Affiliate hosting companies provide detailed statistics on click-through rates related to sales so it is important to experiment and find out which approach works best for a specific website or blog.

Become a Successful Affiliate

Build trust with website visitors before trying to sell products or services then use affiliate schemes to build strong partnerships with online merchants, recommending products that fit naturally with the website content.
