Writing for the web requires some specific skills. Narrowing your focus will help you get paid to write on the web more easily.

Paid web writing falls into several broad categories: paid blogging, self-directed freelance web writing, and copywriting. The key principles to successful web writing are practice, short sentences, and writing with keywords.

Practice

The more you write, the better you write. Set aside time each day to write, and write even if you don’t have anything to write about. Being paid to write comes from confidence and competence, and the more you practice writing, the more money your writing will make. Writing on the web for free is an excellent way to start. If you proofread your writing you measure how professional it is.

Short Sentences

A paid web writer gets to the point. He writes short sentences with active verbs to keep his readers interested. Good writers for the web don’t beat around the bush; each sentence conveys an idea.

Writing With Keywords

Web writing must be focused on keywords. What are your keywords? That’s up to you or your client. Pick words or phrases that are very specific to your topic. Imagine what phrase a person would type into a search engine, and make that the topic of your article or blog.

Three Ways to Write for Pay on the Web

  • Paid Blogging can take the form of being paid to post in your own weblog, or you can be hired to write posts for somebody else. Maintaining your own blog is a good idea no matter how you want to get paid to write on the web; it gives your clients a sample of your style. If you wish to get paid to post in your own blog, you must develop a readership to sell to prospective clients.

  • Self-Directed Freelance Web Writing is what a writer does when he works for a site such as Suite 101 or Helium. The writer determines the topic and is paid based on how much advertising revenue the article generates. Most of these freelance web writing sites have excellent tracking tools.

  • Copywriting jobs are given to writers that have a track record or reputation. Businesses need web pages, advertising copy, newsletters, blog posts, and social networking pages written and updated.

Successful freelance web writing depends upon good communication. You first must communicate with your client, and then with your client's readers. Angela Booth's tips for freelance web writers is an excellent resource for finding work as a professional web writer. Continuously read more about writing, like in Christopher Meeks' blog. Finally, just keep writing.
