Rural Home-Based Business Challenges

How to Manage a Rural Home Business

Jun 5, 2009 Cherrine Banks

A rural home-based business can provide more than normal challenges for a business owner. Some concerns are deliveries, equipment and telecommunications, and supplies.

A rural home-based business can provide a community with economic growth and provide individuals with the opportunity to spend more time with family, friends, or hobbies. Running a home-based business is challenging when an individual lives in a big city filled with fast Internet access, regular postal deliveries, and multiple store options for purchasing office supplies.

On the other hand, home-business owners who live and work in rural towns may not have these luxuries. This lack of adequate business resources can create a greater level of financial and emotional problems for a household.

Determining Deliveries

A rural home-based business owner can check with the postal service about picking up and dropping off mail. Some rural communities may only offer one day per week delivery at specific times. A business owner can learn about the range of postal services. Also, check into paid postal services such as UPS and FedEx about postal options.

For a flat monthly fee, each may provide pickup and deliveries. A home-business does have the choice to locate the closest shipping outlet which may take a few hours to reach. Two popular choices for rural home-business owners are investing in a postage meter and exploring online postal printing.

Efficient Equipment and Telecommunications

A home-business owner can invest in the most affordable equipment based on current and future growth. For instance, a word processor may need average processing speed for processing school and local business newsletters.

However, additional services such as web design may be added three or four months later so it is better to purchase the best home office equipment now. An inadequate computer can hinder a home-business owner's ability to grow and increase income. Plus, taking a computer to the computer store for upgrades can cause missed deadlines, creating a negative business reputation.

A business owner should aim for the highest Internet speed available and check with multiple Internet service providers to compare costs.

Stocking Office Supplies

A rural home-based worker should keep space for office supplies. Some home-based workers store supplies in a guest closet, basement, or attic. A detailed office supplies list should be kept nearby and checked as supplies are used.

This prevents a home-based worker from purchasing multiple office items. Typical office supplies to store include notepads, boxes of pens and pencils, and office paper. Office supply items can be kept away from water sources to prevent damage. Also, office supplies can be purchased online monthly to save time from driving to distant locations.

A rural home-based business owner can enjoy a great work environment by preparing for common home business problems such as deliveries, equipment, and supplies.
