Earn extra money from websites using multiple income streams to increase returns. Diversify with additional passive income opportunities to safeguard overall income.

Thousands of people make money online by starting a website or blog using Google AdSense and affiliate programs as their main sources of income. The AdSense program provides targeted advertisements related to page content and affiliate product links allow website owners to earn commissions on any items sold.

Whilst both these income streams are quick and easy to implement, the problem for many website owners is that visitor numbers and page views are too small to generate much more than pocket change. When thousands of daily visitors and tens of thousands of page views are required to see any real returns from AdSense or affiliate schemes, the clever webmaster needs to consider alternative income streams as a way of making extra money online.

Multiple Streams of Income

There are many different ways to make money on a website and some methods require a lot more work than simply adding a piece of code and waiting for the sales to come in. But a successful home business recognizes the importance of not putting all the eggs into one internet basket realizing that diversification is key. Consider the following:

  • Referral fees – Earn money from recommending people who can deliver a specific service with payment on a flat fee or percentage basis. This works well with, for example, lawyers, property agents, wedding planners or tradesmen but only do this with people you know and trust so that any recommendation is made in good faith.
  • Self publish an eBook – There are many tutorials available online to show writers how to publish an eBook. Once written, publish the book and sell it via the website. The book can also be offered as an affiliate product allowing additional income to be earned when other people sell the book.
  • Offline business advertising – Build dedicated pages for offline businesses that do not have their own websites. Visit local business owners and sell them a mini low-cost one page site. This works well for locally based travel websites.
  • Build a local business directory – Another opportunity for travel websites, a local directory will serve as a good resource for tourists and whilst an individual listing may only cost a few dollars, a large directory can soon make a sizable income.
  • Paid Link or Banner Advertising – Websites are ranked higher on search engines when they have good quality links from well established sites. Many companies will pay for these links so capitalize on any requests for paid link advertising and/or offer it as an option within an advertising opportunities page.
  • Pay per click affiliate programs – These differ from pay per sale affiliate programs as they do not require the visitor to buy a product merely to click through to a website and look at the offers available. Revenues may only be a few cents per click but are generated every time there is a lead as opposed to waiting in vain for a visitor to buy a product via an affiliate link.
  • Donations button – Ask for a small donation as a way of saying thanks for providing lots of free information on the website. It’s easy to set up a donation button using PayPal and regular website visitors often leave far more than expected. Ask them to share the website URL with friends on social bookmarking websites like Facebook or Digg if they can’t afford to give a donation.

Passive Income Streams

Some ways of making money on a website are harder to set up than others but once, implemented, most will continue to earn money silently. Remember to keep it real when selling advertising space and provide honest traffic statistics as advertisers will not renew their ads if they don’t generate any business.

Multiple online income opportunities are really only limited by a website owner’s imagination and one bright idea often leads to another so have some fun and experiment.

Make Money on the Internet

Don’t just rely on Google AdSense or affiliate programs to make money online. Prepare a solid monetization blueprint with multiple income streams before starting a website and add passive income opportunities as the site becomes more established to protect earnings should one income stream fail.
